Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
