Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
