A two-month cruise through the Land Down Under is being halted following the fatal incident of an older female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but broke off from the group for a rest. The vessel departed without her and went back later that day after the personnel realised the woman was missing.

A large-scale search operation located her remains the next day.

Authorities are examining the incident, together with police and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that guests and staff on the ship were told that the remainder of the voyage had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that passengers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also published an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Master" preventing any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would attend the ship in Cairns upon its coming back.

The vessel originally sailed from the Australian port on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the voyage at the point of the senior passenger's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the journey.
